October 6 & 7
Alicia will share her colorful and expressive, yet SOFTER technique of painting young faces in this workshop. There will be lots of demonstrations, individual and group discussion and plenty of one-on-one direction in this workshop, specifically focused on painting children and babies!
Students will be supplied with a materials list and will have the opportunity to paint from their own photo or photos as Alicia demonstrates a subject for the class to observe. She will explain what makes a good photo from which to paint on the material list. If students wish to paint the same subject that Alicia is demonstrating, that photo subject will also be supplied. Class size will be limited.

SUPPLIES FOR “Children and Babies in Watercolor” Taught by Alicia Farris
Paper -
1-2 pieces of 300lb or 140lb Fabriano or Arches hot press – 22” x 30” (we’ll use 11” x 15” quarter sheets)
You may substitute stretched cold press 140lb paper for hot press, but I will be working on hot press paper, as it’s easier to paint without having to stop to dry the paper.
Paint
Think of a “warm” and a “cool” of most of the basic colors
No worries if you don’t have these exact colors. I will be using some or all of the following colors:
Scarlett Lake (W and N)
Quinacradone Rose (Daniel Smith)
Alizarin Crimson
Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna
Burnt Sienna
Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Blue
Peacock Blue (Holbein)
Cobalt Turquoise (Da Vinci or Holbein) or Cobalt Turquise Light (Winsor Newton)
Hookers Green
Quin. Gold
Watercolor brushes
(Any brushes that you like that come to a nice point)
I recommend a #6 or #8 round, and a #12, #14, or #16 round . You’ll start with and use the larger one quite a bit. This larger size is important to start your painting.
Misc.
Table easel
palette with large mixing area. Can be a white plastic plate -not Styrofoam or paper
box of tissues
Paper towels or an old towel
large cup or plastic container for water. Divided food storage containers work great.
Clips and board or ½ inch foam core board for painting surface
Masking tape if you are using 140lb. paper
Pencil and sketchbook
gum or white eraser (“Moo” eraser is my favorite)
photos for subject matter **
**I am including a photo with good values for an example. If you’d like to paint this image, as I’ll be demonstrating it feel free, otherwise, you may use your own photo with good dark/light values. As you will be freer with color and more relaxed painting someone unfamiliar, you may wish to start with this subject or one of your own of someone you don’t know. If you have an image or images you’d like to use, please try to draw at least one of them on your watercolor paper before the first day of class.
Please plan your drawing with composition in mind and so the face is approximately life size or a bit smaller. Make sure that your pencil lines will be visible through several layers of watercolor. If choosing your own photo, look for good darks and lights and please use a color photo, although you may also print and bring a copy in black and white. You’ll want to print out at least a 6” x 8” - 8”x 10” of your image from which to work OR work from your image downloaded to a tablet.
