Friday June 20th
Looking forward to getting better photos from your existing or new camera? Wanting to learn more about the operation of your camera? How about better compositions – getting your photos looking like you thought they should be? This is a workshop for the beginner to the more accomplished photographer. We will spend Friday evening going over the basics of camera use, camera controls and better composition. On Saturday we will take a field trip to practice what was covered in the Friday class. We will then return to the gallery at 4:30 to 6:30 for presentation and discussion of the images taken on the field trip (bring a laptop to the final session, if you have one). Both days will offer the opportunity for class discussion and individual questions. It is recommended that you have an actual camera, however a phone might also prove okay. The class can also offer the information needed to find a new camera. Bring your camera to both sessions!
The class will be taught by professional photographer and photo educator, Jerry Benner, who has over 60 years of photo experience from film to digital. Jerry is a juried member of Missouri Artists on Main as well as Best of Missouri Hands. You can view some of his photos in the MAOM Gallery. He has taught photography to elementary thru high school students as well as on the university level. His photos have been displayed in numerous galleries in the St. Louis area and has had three individual shows in the Ashby-Hodge Gallery in mid-Missouri as well as the state capitol. He brings fun and experience to all in his workshops.
Class has a minimum of 4 students and a maximum of 8. Class is open to youth between 14 and older, however a parent must be present at both sessions (the parent need not pay the cost of the class unless taking the class). Transportation for the field trip is the responsibility of the student.

Oct. 10 & 11
Alicia will share her studies of the human face in this two-day watercolor workshop. Using Alicia's characteristic loose and colorful style, students will learn techniques to portray not just a likeness, but more importantly the personality and emotion of the human face or subject. Students will benefit from demonstrations each day as well as individual and group discussion. This workshop is designed for the painter who has at least a basic command of the watercolor medium, the serious beginner to the advanced student. Portrait painting is not a prerequisite. Alicia will work with students individually to help them nurture their own artistic journey.
Sample photos for the demonstrations will be supplied to all students who register. We will discuss painting a child as well as an adult subject. Alicia will demonstrate painting a child during class time. Students will have the opportunity to work from supplied photos or from their own if they wish, during the workshop.
SUPPLIES FOR “IMPRESSIONS AND EXPRESSIONS ” Taught by Alicia Farris
Paper -
1-2 pieces of 300lb or 140lb Fabriano Artistico, Canson Heritage, or Stonehenge Aqua hot press – 22” x 30” sheets (we’ll divide them into 11” x 15” quarter sheets) Stonehenge only comes in 140lb weight sheets. If you have cold press and don’t wish to purchase hot press paper, that’s fine but I’ll be demonstrating on hot press. The process is a bit different. Blick Art Supply is a good place to get supplies. (online or local if you’re lucky enough to live near a store!)
Paint
Think of a “warm” and a “cool” of the basic colors. No worries if you don’t have these exact colors. I will be using some or all of the following, predominately transparent colors:
Scarlett Lake (W and N)
Alizarine Crimson or Quinacridone Rose (“cool” red)
Raw Sienna W and N
Burnt Sienna W and N
Ultramarine Blue
Peacock Blue
Cobalt Turquoise (Da Vinci or Holbein) or Cobalt Turquise Light (W and N) or Cobalt Teal (M. Graham)
Hookers Green
Quin. Gold
Mineral Violet (Holbein or M. Graham)
Watercolor brushes
(Any brushes that you like that come to a nice point – Silver Black Velvet Brushes are great) I recommend: #6 or #8 round, and a #12, #14 or #16 round . This larger size is important to start.
Misc.
Table easel (important, even if you don’t normally work on one)
palette with large mixing area. Can be a white plastic plate -not Styrofoam or paper
box of tissues
Paper towels or an old towel
large cup or plastic container for water. Divided food storage containers work great.
Clips and board or ½ inch foam core board for painting surface
Masking tape if you are using 140lb. paper
Pencil and sketchbook
Extra “practice” watercolor paper
gum or white eraser
photos for subject matter **
**About 2 weeks out, I will send a photo reference of the face that I’ll demo. If you’d like to paint from the same image, you are welcome. As you will be freer with color and more relaxed painting someone unfamiliar, you may wish to start with my subject or one of your own of someone you don’t know. When working with hot press, I like to be sure I’m working on the front side of the paper. The watermark/brand name will be facing the correct way on the front.
Please have your image drawn on your watercolor paper before the first day of class. You will only need the outlines of the most important shapes, not all the detail. I will send a sample outline as well.
Please plan your drawing with composition in mind and so that the face is approximately life size or a bit smaller. Make sure that your pencil lines will be visible through several layers of watercolor. If choosing your own photo, look for a photo with a good light source so that your subject has good light and shadow shapes. Please use a color photo as reference, although you may also print and have on hand, a copy in black and white. You’ll want to print out at least a 6” x 8” - 8”x 10” of your image from which to work OR work from your image downloaded to a tablet.
